With the recent passage of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) and with the Supreme Court upholding the legislation, you would think we could all breathe a sigh of relief. Ahhh, healthcare reform and healthcare coverage for all…right?? Nope. As soon as it passed, douchebag House legislators began furiously working to repeal it.
Today (7/11), the GOP-controlled House is set to vote on repealing healthcare reform. Again. Since January 2011, the House has voted to repeal all or part of healthcare reform 32 times. Yep, 32 times. Obsessed much??
So what would it mean if these anti-choice assholes succeed?
With healthcare reform, insurance companies could no longer discriminate against women, forcing them to pay up to 150 times more than men for the same procedures. Insurance companies could no longer label domestic violence and C-sections “pre-existing conditions” and deny coverage. 3.1 million young people, who could stay on their parents’ insurance until the age of 26, would be forced to go without insurance if they couldn’t afford it. Healthcare reform would increase Medicaid coverage to low-income women, particularly women of color.
It would be the end of no co-pays for over 45 million women. It would eliminate no co-pays for contraception, mammograms, and screenings for cervical cancer, diabetes, heart disease. It would mean increasing barriers to contraception and maternity care. Increasing barriers impoverished women, women of color and young people.
We’re talking about stripping away healthcare coverage for domestic violence, rape or sexual assault. Stripping away coverage for C-sections. Stripping away co-pays for birth control, mammograms and pap smears.
Basically, stripping away our fundamental rights.
The GOP claims they want to repeal healthcare reform because of “what it’s doing to jobs.” I call bullshit. They don’t fucking care about jobs. If they did, we wouldn’t be witnessing the onslaught of sexist, racist, anti-choice legislation designed to strip away reproductive rights and increase barriers to abortion access.
They don’t give a shit about jobs. No, but they do care very, very much about regulating bodies, especially vaginas.
These anti-choice, anti-women, anti-everything legislators don’t care about the Supreme Court or listening to their constituents (only 1/3 want it repealed). They only care about stripping away people’s rights.
Demand they uphold healthcare reform. Demand they uphold our fundamental rights.
